common pistol's made out of three big parts that house the little parts. ye've got the barrel, that's the tube the bullet travels down to give it its trajectory. ye've got the frame, that's the handle and the bit that's not the chamber mechs. the last part's the action, that's all the parts that fire it. cartridge, bullet housing, trigger.

Yeah. The action's the complicated part... Is it easy to customize?
eh, s'not that complicated in a simple revolver. ye got yer flint, yer powder cap, the little arm to make'em move...
hold on. i am not a man skilled in drawing, we don't really have paper where i come from, so i can barely write to tell ye true. read just fine, but the making of letters...

aye, it's easier just hitting a button of a letter. anyhow, the letters i learned are..they're not DIFFERENT, exactly, but they don't look quite the same.
we have rifles, too, and gattlers if ye're lucky to find one left over from older days. but revolvers are what i ken. started training with'em when i was 5.

Oh. How'd you deal with the recoil when you were that little? It's manageable, but shooting makes my arm hurt...

we just kept shooting for hours, every day, till our arms didn't wobble anymore. and we'd been using bahs and bows a'fore our training irons. which weren't e'en iron, they were nickel. got my first proper guns when i was fifteen.

Capitalization is useful for some things, but it isn't really necessary, huh? But a lot of words sound the same... I don't think I can defend not having standardized spelling.

That's a really small library... Doesn't anyone think reading is fun?
It sounds a lot more useful that way to be honest. I found my calling by chance and I'm not concerned about my future, but not everyone is lucky to be able to train when they're young.

when i said we haven't got much paper, i mean it's rarer than gold or diamond or clean air. there isn't enough to MAKE books. or hardly any folks left who ken how to bind'em proper.

But paper and clean air are both made of plants. You could write in stone or metal as well. It just wouldn't be a traditional library.

arguably. when i checked out, a rebellion had overrun gilead. the people didn't want gunslingers anymore. said too few people held all the power, and that wasn't right. course this all started with an evil wizard and the king of demons, but...eh, there was a point in it, i wot.

Yeah. I'm thankful. It would have been an inconvenience for me if you minded teaching these things to random young strangers even if most worlds aren't as exclusive about their guns.

technically and traditionally, i'm not e'en allowed to let anyone else fire my guns, or let a woman touch'em. dunno why, but roland inducted a lady gunslinger in another world, so i wot it's just stupid superstition. and i've been teaching sue with the guns of eld themselves, neither of us has exploded in a fire of blasphemy.

...I've known more women with guns than men, I think. That seems like a silly rule unless they were scared women would have a higher aptitude for it.

oh aye, i've met plenty of ladies here who can wield a gun damned well. my own lady's had training. but my culture's weird about women, s'all kinds of double standards. women aren't supposed to do much. fucking stupid, if ye ask me.

Being told you're something when all you've known is otherwise is...different. It doesn't surprise me she wouldn't call herself a gunslinger. She hasn't lived the same life either.
The combustion that's required for firing a gun causes lots of heat, right? Would the metal be able to withstand a high degree of heat for an extended period?

In that situation, there isn't a constant, steady heat...but I suppose your point still stands. I wonder if there's a way to safely circulate air through the gun without changing the trajectory, though.
That may be true, but I have to disagree. The time taken for reloading, aiming, and between firing may be short, but it's still time. The internal combustions are near-constant, not constant.
