when i said we haven't got much paper, i mean it's rarer than gold or diamond or clean air. there isn't enough to MAKE books. or hardly any folks left who ken how to bind'em proper.

oh, aye, terribly useful to take toddlers and deny them a childhood and beat'em daily to make killing tools of an entire generation. can't imagine why mine's the only culture i've ever heard of that does it, it's so damned useful.

...and to be clear, i agree it's damned useful, there's no better soldiers or trackers or survivalists than gunslingers, but ye pay for the privilege dear. ye pay with yerself. ye pay with never having yer mother comfort ye or tuck ye in at night, ye pay with never knowing what it is to be a child, never knowing what it is to live without death and pain or the knowledge that ye are nothing but yer gun and how good ye are at killing.

But paper and clean air are both made of plants. You could write in stone or metal as well. It just wouldn't be a traditional library.

That sort of thing can happen just as easily without a productive outcome. At least you were seen as worthwhile to society.

theoretically, aye. but most folks are spending every minute trying to survive. i don't come from what most would call a nice world.

arguably. when i checked out, a rebellion had overrun gilead. the people didn't want gunslingers anymore. said too few people held all the power, and that wasn't right. course this all started with an evil wizard and the king of demons, but...eh, there was a point in it, i wot.

ye're damned lucky it's ME that's the last gunslinger left about, i am devout in my ways, not the traditional ones. i don't hold it all quite as sacred as my forefathers or fellows.

Yeah. I'm thankful. It would have been an inconvenience for me if you minded teaching these things to random young strangers even if most worlds aren't as exclusive about their guns.

technically and traditionally, i'm not e'en allowed to let anyone else fire my guns, or let a woman touch'em. dunno why, but roland inducted a lady gunslinger in another world, so i wot it's just stupid superstition. and i've been teaching sue with the guns of eld themselves, neither of us has exploded in a fire of blasphemy.

oh aye, i've met plenty of ladies here who can wield a gun damned well. my own lady's had training. but my culture's weird about women, s'all kinds of double standards. women aren't supposed to do much. fucking stupid, if ye ask me.

Being told you're something when all you've known is otherwise is...different. It doesn't surprise me she wouldn't call herself a gunslinger. She hasn't lived the same life either.

The combustion that's required for firing a gun causes lots of heat, right? Would the metal be able to withstand a high degree of heat for an extended period?

course, else it wouldn't work. i dunno what they do to the metal but they're made to be fired. hell, e'en a small battle...ye're gonna be firing off dozens and dozens of rounds all in a rapid row.

In that situation, there isn't a constant, steady heat...but I suppose your point still stands. I wonder if there's a way to safely circulate air through the gun without changing the trajectory, though.

That may be true, but I have to disagree. The time taken for reloading, aiming, and between firing may be short, but it's still time. The internal combustions are near-constant, not constant.

trust me, sai. i can demonstrate for ye. e'en the slowest 'slinger takes less than seconds to reload.

Yeah. It’s concentrated light forming a continuous beam. No matter how brief the break is while a gunslinger handles firing and reloads, there’s time taken between each action and projectile, else it would be a solid beam like a sword instead constantly generating heat an an increasing rate...to a certain degree anyway.

I only have one... and I don’t have any ammunition remaining, unfortunately.

aye, but metal holds heat, so the heat remains e'en in that fraction between hammer falls. the combustion's not consistent, but the heat is.

what sort of bullets does it take? i got loads of ammo. dunno how to make a gun from scratch, but bullets is easy. i can do that o'er a campfire!

Maybe... I would think that would allow for the slightest bit of cooling though.
